Is an internal audit necessary for ISO 9001?

February 5, 2019

This is a question we often get asked as we get involved with ISO quality management systems.  I suppose most who are asking are thinking ‘If we have an official audit by an external auditor why do we need an internal one?”.  The fact is you do need an internal audit – not least because it’s a requirement of the international standard.  It can be carried out by an appointed staff member or an independent third party consultant.

So let’s take a brief moment to look at the plus points of an internal audit whilst we’re on the subject:

  1. Internal audits are like a quality system review.  Think of them as you do an MOT for your car.  The nominated person looks at every area of the business and reviews its effectiveness – who knows what improvement suggestions they may find?

  2. It relieves pressure on the external audit.  If you’ve already been through your quality systems and checked everything is working to standard, what do you have to fear about the external audit?

Qualiform can offer assistance with your internal audits.  We’re more than happy to be your internal auditor – that way you can have the benefit of someone who is familiar with the process and also you don’t have to distract a busy staff member.  Alternatively, we can work with your appointed staff member to get them fully trained for the internal audit.  Please contact us on 01472 730530 to discuss the best option for you.

Remember, it is a requirement of the standard, so it needs to be done somehow.
